About Us

1st Bernwood Forest Scout group offers fun, friendship and adventure for all age groups from 4 to 18.

Scouting in the Long Crendon area began in 1958 and continues to thrive today.

History: Looking back, our group has overcome several crises over the years. In 2004 we struggled to continue with only 18 members across Dinton, Long Crendon and Shabbington scouting and then in 2007 an arson attack on the Long Crendon scout hut destroyed our original site.

Today: Through our fantastic team of volunteers and the combined spirit of our local village groups, the 1st Bernwood Forest Scout Group was created in 2008. We were one of the few groups to continue scouting during Covid, running virtual Zoom sessions every week to over 88 young people. Today we have grown to be one of the largest scouting groups in the area with over 140 young persons from aged 4 to 14,  attending scouting activities regularly and we continue to grow with an increased demand for membership.

Location: Our headquarters is in Long Crendon, next to the tennis courts and the playing fields (which we regularly use). Our members are from our surrounding villages including Dinton, Stone, Cuddington, Chilton, Shabbington and more. All our sections take part in our top-quality Scouting programme every week, providing skills for life for 4 to 18-year-olds.

We are organised into sections which are based on the ages of the young people. They each have a name (after a bird) and are as follows:

  • Magpies Squirrels for young persons from 4 to 6 years old
  • Kestral Beavers and Osprey Beavers for young persons from 6 to 8 years old
  • Eagles Cubs, Falcon Cubs and Hawk Cubs for young persons from 8 to 10 years old
  • Harrier Scouts and Raven Scouts for young persons from 10 to 14 years old
  • Panther Explorers for young persons from 14 to 18 years olds (linked unit)

Volunteering: Each section is led by a team of uniformed volunteers from a diverse background, with many who have never volunteered in scouting before.

Some of our volunteers come every week; some due to work and personal commitments come less often; we even have parent couples that role share – whatever works for them. Everyone is welcome. All of our volunteers work together in leader teams to ensure the standards of the Scout Movement are upheld and that the young people in their care receive fun-filled, diverse and activity-filled programmes.  You can find out who the volunteers are for each section on our group pages, please click on the Join Link.

Programmes and Badges: Our activity-filled programmes are designed to provide our young people with skills for life.  The achievement of each activity or challenge is acknowledged by a badge or an award.  You can learn more about the badges on the link: Scouting Website – Badges.

We believe that through everyday adventure, new challenges and experiences we can enriche both young persons’ and adults’ lives and true friendships are made along the way. Come and join our adventure…
