Exciting News – The Squirrels are coming!

1st Bernwood Forest Scout Group are keen to start the first Squirrels Drey in the Chiltern Vale District but we need your help! Help us get four and five year olds into Scouting.
Based in Long Crendon, 1st Bernwood Forest Scout Group is one of the largest in the Chiltern Vale District and now we are looking to further develop with the introduction of Squirrels.
So what is Squirrels? Squirrel Scouts | Scouts
A Squirrel Drey is for 4-5 year olds before they move up to Beavers at 6 years of age
The activities have been specifically designed for 4- and 5-year-olds, and vary from arts & crafts, cooking and campfire activities to community support projects like litter picking or residential home visits, global learning about cultures and celebrations to outdoor activities such as hikes. This is a nationally supported initiative, there are loads of activities already developed and used by other Squirrel Drey’s across the country.
The Squirrel’s Programme is founded on
- Child led learning – we ask what they like doing and build it into the programme
- A focus on participation over achievement – taking part as squirrels
- Adaptable and flexible sessions
- And lastly but most importantly, it’s all about having fun, trying new things and learning while doing!
You are giving the young people the chance to make friends and start building new skills for life.
Why do we need your help?
To kick start a small drey we were hoping to recruit a group of interested parents to get the Drey off the ground, while in the long run we will look for uniformed volunteers. These parents would be supported by our Group Scout Leader, Martin Summerhayes and the wider Squirrels network within Scouting – including Bev, the county lead. We are open to discussing the best evenings of the week or even weekends for running the Drey.
If this is something you might be interested in helping out with; Martin will host a zoom session to discuss the idea if we get sufficient interest. Please let us know on bernwoodmembers@gmail.com if you would be interested in attending.
