Honouring Gwen Colwell: A Legacy of Scouting and Community Spirit

The 1st Bernwood Forest Scout Group is grateful for the generous donation made in memory of Gwen Colwell, a member of our community with a lifelong connection to Scouting. The donation, made by Gwen’s family and friends, is a tribute to her passion for Scouting and her support of young people.
Gwen and her husband were both involved in the Scouting movement, playing a significant role in their lives. In fact, it was through Scouting that they first met after the war, and their involvement continued for many years, particularly within the Long Crendon community. Gwen’s contributions helped shape the experiences of countless young people, instilling in them skills, values, and friendships.
Her daughter, Alison Wynne, chose to direct the funds raised at Gwen’s memorial to the 1st Bernwood Forest Scout Group in recognition of this lifelong connection. “Scouts played such a significant part in my mother’s life, and it felt right to support the organisation she cared so much about,” Alison shared. The donation will help ensure that Scouting continues to thrive in the community, providing valuable experiences to over 120 young people ranging from Squirrels to Scouts.
We are honoured to receive this contribution and will ensure that Gwen’s legacy lives on in the opportunities we provide for our young members. On behalf of all the leaders, volunteers, and Scouts, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Alison and everyone who contributed. Your kindness and generosity will make a lasting impact on the next generation of Scouts in Long Crendon.
A photograph from 1981, showing Gwen (circled) among Cubs and leaders in the Scout Hut garden, serves as a beautiful reminder of her dedication.
