St Georges Day Parade 2022

Date: 26th Apr 2022 Author: Martin Summerhayes
On Sunday 24th April 2022, 1st Bernwood Forest Scouts joined with all the other scout groups in the district for the annual St George’s day parade and service to renew our scouting promises. This was the first time in over two years that everyone was together and as you can see from the photos it was a great day out. With over 50 young people and scout leaders, it was a fantastic turnout to share and celebrate scouting.
Why is St George the patron saint of scouting?
St George is the Patron Saint of scouting and was chosen by Baden-Powell (the Father of Scouting) for a very good reason. St George was picked because of the story that shows him overcoming adversity in the shape of a dragon. Baden-Powell said at the time:
“When St George was faced by a difficulty or danger, however great it appeared, even in the shape of a dragon – he did not avoid it or fear it but went at it with all the power he could… That is exactly the way a Scout should face a difficulty or danger no matter how great or how terrifying it may appear. They should go at it boldly and confidently, using every power that they can to try and overcome it, and the probability is that they will succeed.”
This can be broken down into the following:
Responsibility
Truthfulness
Devotion to duty
A brave heart
A noble spirit
Dedication to helping others
